CLA Administration 2009-2010
The CLA was administered to 108 non-transfer freshmen in Fall 2009 and to 95 non-transfer seniors in Spring 2010. In order to ensure a representative test sample, students in each group were selected in quartiles of SAT scores that closely matched proportions of SAT scores of all freshmen and seniors; in addition, other demographic attributes such as gender and race were used to select the test sample.
Overall student performance was excellent. The freshmen cohort performed higher than 96 percent of freshmen at comparison institutions and the senior cohort performed higher than 96 percent of seniors at comparison institutions.
The University made significant improvements in terms of its value added scores, moving from the “below expected” category in 2008-2009 to the “near expected” category in 2009-2010. This means that the University’s contribution (or value added) to the development of students’ general education skills is comparable to that of peer institutions.
These results confirm the appropriateness of the General Education curriculum’s focus on critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and written communication; however, despite the exceptionally high student performance, there appears to be room for institutional improvement. The results will be reviewed by the General Education Subcommittee and used along with other assessment indicators for decision-making purposes regarding pedagogy and the General Education Curriculum.
