The University of Georgia 2010-2020 Strategic Planning Committee has examined the strategic framework of the university for the coming decade and developed Building on Excellence, University of Georgia, 2020 Strategic Plan. Working through 2009 to develop the new plan, the committee examined completion of goals of the 2000-2010 Strategic Plan; the academic, political, and budgetary climate for the next ten years; the strategic plans of selected peer and aspirational institutions; selected university-wide task-force reports; and faculty, staff, student, and external input from various constituencies.

Building on Excellence, University of Georgia, 2020 Strategic Plan was approved by the University Council at its March 18, 2010 meeting. Implementation plans and measurable benchmarks for new strategic directions are currently being developed.
